Understanding the Data Hierarchy

You can have data without information,
but you cannot have information without data. ㅡ Daniel Keys Moran
but you cannot have information without data. ㅡ Daniel Keys Moran
When businesses store data items on computer systems, they are often stored in a framework called the data hierarchy that describes the relationships between data components.
- Characters are letters, numbers, and special symbols, such as A, 7, and $. Anything you can type from the keyboard in one keystroke is a character, including seemingly “empty”characters such as spaces and tabs.
- Fields are data items that each represent a single attribute of a record; fields are composed of one or more characters. Fields include items such as lastName, middleInitial, streetAddress, or annualSalary.
- Records are groups of fields that go together for some logical reason. A random name, address, and salary aren’t very useful, but if they’re your name, your address, and your salary, then that’s your record. An inventory record might contain fields for item number, color, size, and price; a student record might contain an ID number, grade point average, and major.
- Files are groups of related records. The individual records of each student in your class might go together in a file called Students.dat. Similarly, records of each person at your company might be in a file called Personnel.dat.
A database holds groups of files or tables that together serve the information needs of an organization.
Database software establishes and maintains relationships between fields in these tables, so that
users can pull related data items together in a format that allows businesspeople to make managerial
decisions efficiently.
Have you ever tried working on database? If yes, can you share us your own experience? if not, would you like to create your own database in the near future?

Of course, I did. Actually it is a requirement for us to work with our own database. Super helpful sya specially kung need mo talaga mag-store ng large amount of data.judedominguiano wrote:Have you ever tried working on database? Yes ma'am why?

One example of ng mga kailangan gumamit ng databases are companies. Since kailangan nila magstore ng data, gumagamit sila ng database for queries. Yung sa mga restaurants, every transactions, pumapasok sya sa databases nila.Sean wrote:ma'am usually saang lugar po may database ?

Ma’am if database is considered a file, then what is the difference between data and a file?

pre opinyon ko lang . yung data kasi siya yung mga quantities, characters, or symbols in which operations are performed by a computer, also yung file is naka stored and transmitted . Yung data din pala yung may relationship yung bawat laman nun. Tapos pinagisa lang siya pre . while yung file naman siya yung nag co.collect ng mga data, program etc. Naka stored siya sa computer memory o sa storage device na may single identifying name lang siya .LouiseSebastianeYagi wrote:Ma’am if database is considered a file, then what is the difference between data and a file?
